WASTE AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
- A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY
The Waste 2008 Conference took place at the Stratford Manor, Stratford-on-Avon, on 16-17 September 2008.
This was the fifth in a series of biennial conferences which showcased UK applied research and waste policy presentations focused on the implementation of European legislation in the form of the waste strategies of England and the devolved administrations.
The title of the Conference, Waste and Resource Management – a Shared Responsibility, reflected Defra’s vision for producer and consumer responsibility, set out in the Waste Strategy. To that end, our six keynote speakers were from all the relevant sectors of our community:
- Mike Anderson - Director General, Climate Change Group – Defra The low carbon economy: the contribution of the waste & resources management industry
- Paul Bettison – Chairman of the Environmental Board of the Local Government Association. The LGA perspective
- Keith Riley – Managing Director of Veolia Environmental Group WOT NO WASTE?
- Jane Bickerstaffe – Director- INCPEN Shared Responsibility for Packaging
- Erika Coghlan – Vice President, Public Affairs and Communications – Coca-Cola Enterprises Corporate responsibility and sustainability
- Michael Warhurst – Senior Campaigner, Resource Use – Friends of the Earth Sustainable Waste Management - what it is, and what it isn’t
The Conference presented 74 papers and posters in parallel sessions over two days, an intense delivery schedule which enabled anyone attending to select a favoured theme and run with it for each day. In total, 150 practitioners attended the Conference, from industry, consultancy, local and central Government, the third sector, and academia, making this the most successful Waste Conference to date.
